Snow day calculator

Updated August 25, 2026

Will school be closed tomorrow? Enter your town and the rock reads the actual forecast: snow before the morning commute, timing, ice, and cold. Odds, never promises. Districts decide; weather only votes.

How this snow day calculator works

Every other calculator hands you a mystery percentage from a formula nobody can inspect. This one is wired to a live forecast engine that grades its own claims against real observations every day, and it shows you the ingredients that matter: how much snow lands before 6 AM, whether ice rides underneath it, and how cold the morning gets. The full odds engine arrives with this winter's storm totals build. Until it does, the calculator reports real forecast ingredients and refuses to invent a number it cannot defend. That is the house rule here: no made-up precision, ever.

What actually closes schools

Timing beats totals. Four inches ending at 5 AM closes more schools than eight inches at noon, because the decision is really about buses on dark roads. Ice outranks snow: a tenth of an inch of glaze does what a foot of powder cannot. Rural districts with hilly back roads close easier than cities with plow fleets, and dangerous cold can close schools with no snow at all. A good calculator weighs all of it and tells you which ingredient is driving the answer.

Is any snow day calculator accurate?

Honestly: nobody knows, because none of them keep score in public. The famous one runs on a formula from decades ago. The rest are clones chasing the search term. Ours will be the exception the same way the forecast is: every claim graded after the fact, in a ledger, where being wrong costs us and teaches the engine. When the odds engine ships, its report card ships with it.

College and work closings

The same weather drives every closing decision, but the thresholds climb. Colleges close less readily than school districts, employers less readily still. Read any snow day odds as a ceiling: if the school number is low, the campus number is lower, and your boss's number rounds to zero.

Snow day questions, answered

How does this snow day calculator work?

It reads the real forecast for your town and shows the ingredients: snow by morning, timing, ice, and cold, with the reasoning visible. No mystery numbers.

Is it accurate?

It will be graded in public like everything else on this site. Until the odds engine ships, it only says what the forecast supports.

What makes schools close?

Timing, ice, buses, road types, and cold, roughly in that order. Totals matter less than everyone thinks.

When should I check?

The night before. Storm totals firm up as the storm gets close, and so do the odds.

While you wait for the snow: the live forecast knows what today is doing, Weather School explains why, and the weather rock explains itself.
