A low of 34 and frost anyway: what West Virginia's advisory says, and the shirt for a clear cold night
NWS Charleston posted a Frost Advisory for 13 West Virginia counties with lows near 34. What it says, and the Rock Shop shirt for a frosty night.

Key points
- NWS Charleston, West Virginia issued a Frost Advisory on Tuesday evening for 13 counties of central and northern West Virginia. It calls for lows as low as 34 degrees from 3 to 9 a.m. EDT Wednesday.
- The advisory adds that isolated sub-freezing temperatures could occur in the low-lying valleys of the northern lowlands. It says sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.
- The Rock Shop's Clear Moon, Frost Soon shirt suits a night like this. The shop is how the forecast on this site stays free.
A 34 on the forecast, and frost anyway
A low of 34 sounds like it should be safe. The Weather Service's evening product says otherwise.
NWS Charleston sent the advisory at 8:25 p.m. EDT Tuesday for Pleasants, Tyler, Roane, Wirt, Calhoun, Ritchie, Doddridge, Clay, Braxton, Gilmer, Lewis, Harrison and Taylor counties. The WHAT line reads "Temperatures as low as 34 will result in frost formation." The WHEN line gives 3 AM to 9 AM EDT Wednesday. The product's machine-readable end time reads 5 a.m. EDT, which differs from that WHEN line. This piece quotes the WHEN line.
Frost forms when a surface cools below freezing while the air a few feet up reads a few degrees warmer. The office points to that gap itself: "Isolated sub-freezing temperatures could occur in the low-lying valleys of the northern lowlands of West Virginia early Wednesday morning." The impacts line says "Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation." Its advice is to take steps to protect tender plants from the cold. The Weather School lesson on [morning frost](/journal/explainers/morning-frost) walks through why a clear, still night can do this.
