Frost advisories from Puget Sound to Portland and freeze watches east of the Cascades: the first cold nights of fall, and the shirt for them
Seven Weather Service offices posted frost advisories and freeze watches across the West tonight. What they say, and the Rock Shop shirt for the turn of.

Key points
- Frost advisories from the National Weather Service offices in Seattle, Portland, Eureka and Pocatello cover early Monday, Oct. 12. Lows in the products run 30 to 36 degrees, from Puget Sound and the Portland metro to interior Humboldt County and the Snake River Plain.
- Freeze watches from Spokane, Pendleton and Las Vegas follow for Monday night into Tuesday morning. Lows as low as 23 are in the Grande Ronde Valley product, and 29 at Moses Lake and Lewiston.
- The Rock Shop's Beauties of its Own shirt is made for a change of season like this one. The shop is how the forecast on this site stays free.
The first cold nights in the Northwest, in the Weather Service's own words
The West has been busy this week with a tropical storm's rain and a Montana snowstorm. This evening the Weather Service turned to something quieter: the first cold nights of fall. Seattle's advisory covers Olympia, southern Puget Sound and the lowlands of Pierce and southern King counties, with lows "as low as 30 to 36 degrees Monday morning." Portland's covers the Willamette Valley, the Portland and Vancouver metros and the Cascade foothills, with lows of 33 to 36. Both offices run them from midnight to 8 a.m. PDT and give the same plain warning to gardeners: "Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered."
The second night looks colder east of the Cascades. Spokane has a freeze watch out for Moses Lake, Ephrata, Quincy and Othello, and another for Lewiston, Clarkston and the Okanogan Valley from Omak to Oroville. Both carry "sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29F possible" from Monday evening through Tuesday morning. Pendleton's watches cover the Lower Columbia Basin and the Blue Mountain foothills at 30, Wallowa County at 26 and the Grande Ronde Valley at 23. Those products warn that a freeze "could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing." In California, Las Vegas has a freeze watch for the northern Owens Valley at 30.
Pocatello's advisory has one honest line worth reading. It covers the Snake River Plain at 33 degrees, then adds: "Cloud cover and precipitation will make the temperature forecast a bit tricky overnight so confidence is less than desired and some spots in these zones could briefly drop below freezing." Clouds act like a lid over the ground at night. Where they break, the ground loses its heat to the sky and frost can form. Where they hold, it may not. The Weather School lesson on [morning frost](/journal/explainers/morning-frost) explains how frost grows straight from the air onto a cold surface. This desk wrote about the old saying [clear moon, frost soon](/journal/beat/clear-moon-frost-soon-the-proverb-and-the-shirt/) on Oct. 1. Tonight the same lesson is playing out on the West Coast.

The shirt
The Rock Shop sells a shirt for the turn of the year: Beauties of its Own, a line the shop credits to Dickens. It's for the person who notices the first morning the windshield needs scraping and doesn't mind it much. It suits the change-of-season weeks: the first frost on the grass, the first cold walk to the car, the tomatoes brought in the night before. The shop is how this site pays for itself. Buying from it keeps the forecast free, with no ads and no paywall.
This is an evening summary, not emergency information. For live warnings see weather.gov and your local officials.
